A New College Ratings System: IACTE Responds to Request for Feedback

nadenephoto2President Obama has directed the U.S. Department of Education to develop and publish a new college ratings system that would be available for students and families before the 2015-16 school year. The ratings system is supposed to help students compare the value offered by colleges and encourage colleges to improve.

Open forums were held and UNI was one of four sites for public comment on November 15, 2013.

IACTE President Nadene Davidson was there to provide input from the IACTE Executive Board.

Here is the statement she made:

Free Webinar on Preparation of Pre-service Teachers for K-12 Online Learning

webinar-adThe Midwest Regional Educational Laboratory at American Institutes for Research will host a free webinar Wednesday, November 20, 1:30-3:00 p.m. CST, to address the question of how we prepare preservice teachers to work in online and blended settings.

“Making Connections: Teaching Preservice Teachers to Teach Online” will feature Kathryn Kennedy, director of research at the International Association for K-12 Online Learning, and Leanna Archambault, assistant professor at Arizona State University, who coauthored the 2012 study Offering Preservice Teachers Field Experiences in K-12 Online Learning: A National Survey of Teacher Education Programs. Kennedy and Archambault will discuss the current landscape in the field. Bryan Zugelder, executive director for undergraduate affairs and partnerships at the University of Central Florida’s College of Education and Human Performance, will share practical examples, and Mary Herring, associate dean of education at the University of Northern Iowa and chair of AACTE’s Committee on Innovation and Technology, will discuss lessons for future work. More information can be found at AACTE’s Blog.

New Look and Features for IACTE website

WilsonBarry2012-The IACTE website was initiated in 2004 and the site has been hosted by UNI at no charge since then.   This summer,  AACTE, our national organization, offered to host state chapter sites at no charge with the provision that the site would also provide timely content from AACTE on the state chapter site.   The IACTE Executive Board approved moving the site and you are seeing the initial results.

WordPress is the publishing platform and is one of the more popular and user-friendly ways to develop a blog or website.   One of the intents is to facilitate more interaction and communication among IACTE members– hopefully the new site will assist this effort.

Websites and blogs are interesting primarily because of the content provided.   I  invite members to submit content or links to material of interest.   Websites are also an opportunity to communicate with our stakeholders–  so don’t hesitate to write or share information that will help us accomplish our organizational mission. –BJW
