9:15 – 10:15 AMBuilding Allies While Educating Allies
Asking for support from colleagues, stakeholders, and policy makers can be hard, especially if you have to explain who and what you are before you can ask for that support. Our panelists this morning have all had to step up and ask for support. ISEA sought the support of members of other state entities when the Iowa Legislators put forth new laws that would dismantle some of the greatest protections Iowa teachers have. Solon Community School District had to convince parents and students that “proficiency” says more about ability than a random letter…while still trying to convince teachers the same. And Buena Vista University faculty and staff had to educate their administrators about what they do as they were asking them for the financial backing to do it well. Each speaker will share with us how they educated others about their work while simultaneously winning them over as allies.

Tammy Wawro and Mary Jane Cobb, ISEA
Matt Townsley, Standards-based grading, Solon Community School District
Roberta Hersom, Buena Vista University

10:15 – 10:30 AMBreak

10:30 – 11:45 AMJob Alike Break-out Sessions
Attendees: Bring your work! We will use this 75 minutes to break out into like groups. Do you teach Human Relations? Bring your best readings, your speaker list, your activities that really work. Teach a course in your reading endorsement sequence? Bring some assessments that have given you rich data. Working on curriculum exhibits or a state accreditation visit? Bring questions for those who have been through the process. Building on our “organic conference” model from last spring, we’ll brainstorm groups that help you network across the state and help you with the continuous improvement we all practice in our teaching and in our programs.
